THE Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has commissioned a study to assess the value, benefits and potential options of a new coastal trail between Fairhaven and Skenes Creek.<\/p>\n
Consultation sessions were held in Wye River and Lorne at the weekend, and communities along the Great Ocean Road are being encouraged to have their say.<\/p>\n
DELWP regional manager of forest and fire planning David Rourke said the study will focus on the 60-kilometre coastline between Fairhaven and Skenes Creek, taking in Lorne, Separation Creek, Wye River and Kennett River.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis section of coast is just spectacular, but it\u2019s currently very difficult to walk or ride along here.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cA trail could provide a unique and sustainable way for people to experience the natural beauty of the Great Ocean Road while also providing a great asset for locals.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe study will look at the opportunities and challenges associated with a trail and assess the social, economic and environmental benefits it could bring.<\/p>\n
\u201cA key objective is to attract visitors to stay for longer and across different times of the year, so that more of the benefits of tourism flow into local communities.”<\/p>\n
The study was recommended in the Renewal Plan for Wye River, Separation Creek and Kennett River, which called for new trails to encourage sustainable tourism, enhance liveability and protect the environment and landscapes of the Great Ocean Road.<\/p>\n
Local residents, community groups, organisations and visitors to the Great Ocean Road can contribute to the study by giving feedback at https:\/\/engage.vic.gov.au\/trail-study or attending a community consultation session at the Apollo Bay Golf Club on Tuesday, June 18 from 6-8pm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
