THE Surf Coast Shire\u2019s Ranger Services team is urging dog owners to continue observing and obeying on-leash and off-leash zones during winter.<\/p>\n
Despite time share zones not being in place until next summer, designated no-dog zones remain in operation and conditions still apply in off-leash zones.<\/p>\n
Councillor Margot Smith said although it\u2019s encouraging to see many locals walking their dogs in the cooler months of the year, it\u2019s important for these public areas to remain safe and enjoyable for everyone to use.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn general, dogs are required to be on leash in all public places in town areas,\u201d Cr Smith said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn designated off-leash areas, which might include reserves and beaches, they are still required to be under effective control. That means they remain in the owner\u2019s sight and will return immediately on
\ncall.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur Ranger Services team wants people to have fun being active with their dogs but at the same time to observe the signs, be mindful of other people and local regulations. We still hear concerns about dogs off leash in some hotspots, particularly some beach areas.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ranger Services also reminds dog owners to pick up after their animals, both when on-leash and off.<\/p>\n
Cr Smith said canine faeces can be hazardous if it\u2019s left undisposed in parks and sporting grounds, increasing the risk of dog litter entering into waterways and stormwater systems.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is the responsibility of owners to pick it up (dog litter) and place it in a bin or compost. Penalties can apply for failure to pick up after your dog, or for failure to be carrying a suitable collection bag or container while out with your dog,\u201d Cr Smith said.<\/p>\n
