A TEMPORARY Bailey bridge was scheduled to be installed on the Great Ocean Road at Moggs Creek yesterday (Wednesday, June 12) as part of a project to replace and upgrade key bridge infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The state and federal governments have invested $3.9 million to replace the existing Moggs Creek bridge with a stronger, wider and safer structure, with improved pedestrian access and cycling lanes.<\/p>\n
To enable the existing bridge to be safely demolished, Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) will install a single lane, pre fabricated Bailey bridge.<\/p>\n
This bridge will first act as a pedestrian connection, before traffic is moved across later this year to allow for major construction on the existing bridge.<\/p>\n
The Bailey bridge was to be lifted into place overnight on Wednesday between 7pm-7am.<\/p>\n
RRV acting regional director (south west) Emma Miller-Olsen said crews had been working since April to install piles and approaches at Moggs Creek in preparation for the Bailey bridge.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Moggs Creek bridge is nearing the end of its design life and needs to be replaced.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn order for us to safely carry out this work, we\u2019re using a Bailey bridge temporarily to help limit disruption and keep traffic flowing on the Great Ocean Road.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe appreciate everyone\u2019s patience while this work is under way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Major construction on the bridge replacement will begin this winter and be completed before Christmas.<\/p>\n
Once the new bridge is operational, the Bailey bridge will be removed.<\/p>\n
