	{"id":26421,"date":"2019-06-19T12:47:12","date_gmt":"2019-06-19T02:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=26421"},"modified":"2019-06-20T09:10:19","modified_gmt":"2019-06-19T23:10:19","slug":"transforming-plant-waste-into-bioplastics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/transforming-plant-waste-into-bioplastics\/","title":{"rendered":"Transforming plant waste into bioplastics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DEAKIN University textile and fibre scientists have discovered how to turn plant waste into a biodegradable material that could replace environmentally-damaging plastics such as those used for packaging and other throwaway items.<\/p>\n<p>The team from the university\u2019s Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) at the Waurn Ponds campus developed the bioplastic by repurposing cotton gin trash \u2013 the seeds, stems, short fibres and other waste by-products left behind from the ginning process used to separate cotton fibres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout 29 million tonnes of cotton lint is produced each year but up to a third of that ends up as cotton gin trash, where it\u2019s then sent to landfill or burned, representing a major environmental impact and lost material value,\u201d team leader Dr Maryam Naebe said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdding value to this waste product will give cotton growers and farmers an additional income stream, while also offering a sustainable alternative to harmful synthetic plastics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the results were part of a project from PhD candidate Abu Naser Md Ahsanul Haque, along with Associate Research Fellow Dr Rechana Remadevi.<\/p>\n<p>The team has been working on transforming gin trash for more than 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers dissolve the cotton leftovers using environmentally-friendly chemicals and then re-cast the recovered bio polymer into a useable bioplastic film. The resulting material has a range of applications, such as a bale wrap, fertilizer and cotton seed packaging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCotton gin trash is a promising source of renewable biomass, because when it\u2019s broken down the resulting organic polymer can potentially be converted into a versatile biodegradable material,\u201d Dr Naebe said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompared to synthetic plastics, our bioplastic is made without the need for toxic chemicals \u2013 which makes it safer and cheaper to produce at a mass scale \u2013 and it has the added bonus of contributing to the circular economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bioplastic can biodegrade and turn into soil, which will then in turn be used to grow cotton, resulting in cotton gin trash during the ginning process, which can then be repurposed again into bioplastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team is now applying their process to other organic waste and fibrous plant materials such as lemongrass, hemp, almond shells, wheat straw, wood saw dust and wood shavings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DEAKIN University textile and fibre scientists have discovered how to turn plant waste into a biodegradable material that could replace environmentally-damaging plastics such as those used for packaging and other throwaway items.
