THE Elite Women\u2019s Road Race in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (CEGORR) has been confirmed as part of the UCI Women\u2019s WorldTour calendar in 2020.<\/p>\n
Having previously been sanctioned as a UCI 1.1 classification, the announcement marks a significant moment for cycling in Australia and for women\u2019s sport.<\/p>\n
A long-time supporter of equal opportunity for riders across the two elite races, CEGORR will offer equal prize money for both the Elite Men\u2019s and Women\u2019s races, as well as for Towards Zero Race Torquay.<\/p>\n
Staging Men\u2019s and Women\u2019s UCI WorldTour events will also attract a stronger field of elite teams and riders, further heightening the profile, scale and stature of the event as well as the Geelong and Surf Coast regions.<\/p>\n
The Deakin University Elite Women\u2019s Road Race on February 1 will be part an exciting weekend of cycling, alongside Towards Zero Race Torquay, the Family Ride, Swisse People\u2019s Ride and the Elite Men\u2019s Race taking place from January 30-February 2.<\/p>\n
UCI Management Committee member and UCI Women’s Commission president Tracey Gaudry said the Elite Women\u2019s road race would open the UCI Women\u2019s WorldTour calendar in 2020.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe elevation of the Deakin University Elite Women’s Road Race to UCI Women’s WorldTour status is in recognition by the UCI of the exceptional standard and promotion of the event since its inception.\u201d<\/p>\n
Deakin University has also reaffirmed its commitment to women\u2019s sport by returning as naming rights sponsor of the race for the next three years.<\/p>\n
Deakin vice-chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander AO said the university was delighted to continue its partnership with CEGORR.<\/p>\n
