TORQUAY College student Nalani Webber will say goodbye to her shiny locks this Friday in honour of two of her family members who have lost their battles with cancer.<\/p>\n
The courageous 12-year-old said she\u2019s participating in the World\u2019s Greatest Shave to pay her respects to those affected by the disease and to advocate for blood cancer research.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m taking part in the World\u2019s Greatest Shave because I lost my great uncle to cancer and recently, I lost my Pa Bob who I miss so much,\u201d Nalani said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am doing this for all the people I know that have lost family and friends to cancer or who are currently fighting cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n
Family friend and Torquay College teacher Margie Foulkes will steer the clippers and shave Nalani\u2019s hair at the school this Friday to mark the last day of term.<\/p>\n
Nalani\u2019s mother, Bianca, said Margie has previously participated in the World\u2019s Greatest Shave and has known her daughter since she was born.<\/p>\n
This year the Leukaemia Foundation is celebrating 21 years of the World\u2019s Greatest Shave campaign.<\/p>\n
More than two million Australians have taken part since 1998, with the foundation raising close to $17 million across two decades. One Aussie is diagnosed with a blood cancer every 41 minutes.<\/p>\n
Nalani said she isn\u2019t afraid of sporting her new look come Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m feeling excited because I want people to know that helping people is an important thing,\u201d the Grade 6 student said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m really happy that people have supported me to shave my hair throughout this past month by donating money for this great cause.\u201d<\/p>\n
