{"id":26869,"date":"2019-07-03T12:12:05","date_gmt":"2019-07-03T02:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=26869"},"modified":"2019-07-04T11:26:13","modified_gmt":"2019-07-04T01:26:13","slug":"treaty-talks-shire-to-host-free-community-discussion-during-naidoc-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/treaty-talks-shire-to-host-free-community-discussion-during-naidoc-week\/","title":{"rendered":"TREATY TALKS: Shire to host free community discussion during NAIDOC Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A FREE community event about the future of treaty in Victoria and what it might look like will be held in Torquay next week as part of NAIDOC Week.<\/p>\n<p>The Surf Coast Shire will host the July 10 event titled \u201cTalking Treaty\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It will be led by Wadawurrung woman Corrina Eccles.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of NAIDOC Week (July 7-14) this year is \u201cVoice Treaty Truth: Let\u2019s work together for a shared future\u201d, and the Surf Coast Shire said the event \u2013 for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people \u2013 is an opportunity to encourage and support deeper local conversations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people would have seen that the Victorian Government is working with Aboriginal Victorians towards Australia\u2019s first treaty, so our \u2018Talking Treaty\u2019 event is timely,\u201d shire mayor Rose Hodge said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will see Corrina discuss what treaty is and what it might mean for Wadawurrung and for Victoria. It could cover reconciliation, it could be an avenue for truth-telling or it could recognise the unique position of Aboriginal Victorians. We\u2019re so excited to hear Corrina\u2019s insights as she leads this important discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalking Treaty\u201d will be held at the council chambers in Torquay on Wednesday July 10 from 6.30-8.30pm.<\/p>\n<p>To book, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/eventbrite.com.au\/e\/63841209777\"><strong>eventbrite.com.<\/strong><strong>au\/e\/63841209777<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The council is also supporting a series of Art Talks events. People are invited to join decorated artist and curator Maree Clarke at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qdosarts.com\/\">Qdos Arts Lorne<\/a> on Sunday, July 7 for \u201cRevisiting the Past\u201d as she recognises the sovereignty of Aboriginal culture in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>On July 14, award-winning writer Jock Serong will headline a free \u201cRewriting the Past\u201d session at Torquay Library, focusing on using fiction to think about the truth of white settlement. Places are limited to 20 people. Mr Serong will also lead a similar session at Qdos Arts later in the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNAIDOC Week is a highlight on our annual calendar.
