CANCER Council Victoria is calling on local schools to turn yellow next month in support of the Daffodil Day Appeal.<\/p>\n
Recognised across the globe as the symbol of hope for those affected by cancer, the humble daffodil has seen the establishment of a national campaign which raises funds for vital cancer research.<\/p>\n
While survival rates for cancer sufferers have increased by up to 20 per cent, more than 34,500 Victorians will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone.<\/p>\n
A number of aggressive cancers continue to cause premature deaths in Australia, prompting the organisation to strengthen its advocacy work.<\/p>\n
Lyrian Fleming-Parsley, head of community engagement at Cancer Council Victoria, said Daffodil Day promises to be an educative and rewarding experience for those involved.<\/p>\n
\u201cEncouraging children to get involved in this iconic campaign, the Daffodil Day Appeal, is a fantastic opportunity to build relationships with the local community and to show support for those affected by cancer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith one in three Victorians diagnosed with cancer by the age of 75, it\u2019s so important that we fund the best research available. By selling fresh daffodils or having a dress in yellow day for a gold coin donation during August, schools in Victoria can really help to make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCancer in the School Community\u201d, an information resource available to schools, helps to introduce students to the work of Cancer Council Victoria.<\/p>\n
The content is appropriate for all Australian primary and secondary schools and provides practical strategies for principals, school counsellors and school staff to help with the cancer diagnosis of a student, family or staff member.<\/p>\n
Teachers are also encouraged to explain the significance of the Daffodil Day Appeal by using the Twinkle online tools which include teaching resources, classroom activities and display materials.<\/p>\n
