Wergaia songwriter Alice Skye will journey to Anglesea this Saturday to perform alongside fellow artist and friend, Emily Wurramara.<\/p>\n
Hailing from Horsham, Alice released her debut album Friends with Feelings in 2018 and spent much of the year on the road with her band.<\/p>\n
Alice said she was 19 when she began writing the songs which feature on her inaugural record.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe songs were written before I knew I was going to make it into an album, or before I knew it was going to be an
\nalbum. They were really just songs for myself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I was asked if I wanted to do an album, I just said \u2018yes\u2019. It was pretty unexpected, but I\u2019m really glad it\u2019s
\nhappened and that I was able to share them with people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now 23, Alice\u2019s voice has been compared to the likes of British singersongwriter, Birdy.<\/p>\n
Hauntingly beautiful and equally ethereal, Alice\u2019s talent is making waves in the Australian music scene.<\/p>\n
Having toured with Emily last year as her album was submitted for public consumption, Alice said the pair
\nhave since developed a supportive friendship.<\/p>\n
And while their music unites them, it is their deep connection to their Indigenous roots that people recognise in each of their styles.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe toured together last year and that was really great; she\u2019s one of my best friends. It\u2019s also really nice to have somebody that\u2019s got your back in the music industry and is looking out for you and supporting you,\u201d Alice said.<\/p>\n
To add to her list of successes, Alice recently signed a record deal with Bad Apples Music, the label founded by Indigenous Australian rapper, Briggs.<\/p>\n
Alice said while she\u2019s not a hip-hop act, she\u2019s an admirer of Briggs and his label has been \u201creally supportive\u201d of her music since day one.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think that being signed to a label and being successful are synonymous to each other, but it\u2019s really nice having a group of people who are supporting you,\u201d Alice said of the signing.<\/p>\n
Alice most recently recorded a cover of \u201cSpeak Your Language\u201d by Leah Flanagan as part of Deadly Hearts 2, a compilation album which features ten First Nations artists.<\/p>\n
The cover was number one on the Australian Music Radio Airplay Project (AMRAP) metro charts last week.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s always nice to know that community radio is plugging your music. Me and my band had a really good time recording that song,\u201d Alice said.<\/p>\n
The Sound Doctor Presents \u201cAn Evening with Alice Skye and Emily Wurramara\u201d this Saturday at Anglesea Community House (1B McMillan Street, Anglesea) from 7.30pm.<\/p>\n
