VOLUNTEERS from Torquay Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) have expressed their sorrow following the passing of two well-respected life members over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Ken Pollard and Geoff McCoppin are being remembered for their commitments to the club and admirable achievements throughout their lifetimes.<\/p>\n

Ken Pollard <\/strong><\/p>\n

Ken Pollard is being remembered for his famous speeches and deep love for the club.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Ken joined Torquay SLSC in November 1952, gaining his Surf Bronze Medallion the following year. Over the next decade, he participated as an active lifesaver, serving six years as patrol captain. Ken competed for Torquay SLSC until the end of 1962\/63 and was recognised as the Club Champion in 1960. He held many committee positions from 1958-1975 and was the club delegate to state council for eight years during that time. Ken was elected as vice president in 1985. In recognition of his outstanding service, he was elected as a life member in 1972, and received his 40-year membership medallion in 1992. He authored the History of Torquay Surf Life Saving Club in 1995. Ken was also the first Victorian to receive the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his service to the community at the Torquay SLSC in 2009. Each member of Ken\u2019s family has been involved in the surf club, with four out of his five daughters serving as active patrollers. Ken and wife Nancy have 11 grandchildren and a great grandson.<\/p>\n

Geoff McCoppin<\/strong><\/p>\n

Geoff McCoppin, seen here handing our sausages at a Torquay Anzac Day Dawn Service held earlier this decade, remains regarded as a true gentleman who contributed significantly to the club.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Geoff (\u201cRocky\u201d) joined Torquay SLSC in November 1957, obtaining his bronze medallion in January 1958 and his instructors\u2019 certificate in 1972. In 1977, Geoff joined the Board of Examiners. He was a patrol person until 1966 before he was granted active reserve status. During his competition days, Geoff was a member of the B crew which won gold at the state championships in 1960. He was club treasurer from 1960-1964 and again from 1968-69. Geoff became vice president from 1976-78 and president from 89-91, when he introduced the Torquay Swim Run Classic. When the clubhouse building was falling apart, Geoff organised its repair at no cost to members. His relationship with Lindsay Fox saw the transport giant at one stage become a club sponsor. After 37 years of active and administrative service at Torquay SLSC, Geoff was awarded life membership in 1995.<\/p>\n
