THE Surf Coast Agribusiness Network is holding a workshop to help pig, poultry and hemp producers to minimise biosecurity risks for their farms.<\/p>\n
There is a growing interest in the hemp industry, and small-scale pig and poultry production can also be a great food source on smaller lots.<\/p>\n
Yet Surf Coast Shire Council economic development officer, agronomist and workshop presenter Scott Jardine said people must know how to manage the associated risks.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis workshop focuses on the critical subject of biosecurity, particularly in relation to low density mobile outdoor pig and poultry farms and industrial hemp production.<\/p>\n
\u201cRecent livestock disease outbreaks in Europe and Asia have had devastating effects and highlighted the importance of maintaining vigilance across a range of biosecurity measures.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pig and poultry can introduce livestock diseases into Australia, some of which can even be transmitted to people.<\/p>\n
Hemp also needs to be monitored closely, as do certain weeds.<\/p>\n
The workshop will see a group of expert presenters inform people on how to limit these risks and ensure they can farm these products without any major issues.<\/p>\n
It will run on Saturday August 24 from 10am to 4pm at the Mt Moriac Reserve Pavilion.<\/p>\n
