{"id":29425,"date":"2019-08-29T11:59:55","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T01:59:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=29425"},"modified":"2019-08-29T11:59:55","modified_gmt":"2019-08-29T01:59:55","slug":"gulls-and-roos-enjoy-strong-finals-wins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/gulls-and-roos-enjoy-strong-finals-wins\/","title":{"rendered":"Gulls and Roos enjoy strong finals wins"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>BARWON Heads victory over Torquay along with reigning premier Modewarre&#8217;s elimination at the hands of Anglesea has set up the first final between the Kangaroos and the Tigers since 2011.<\/div>\n<div>Torquay enjoyed a strong fi<font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">nish to the season, winning their last five games, but they were outclassed by Barwon Heads who won 10.17 (77) to 6.6 (42).<br \/>Barwon Heads will face-off against first placed Geelong Amateur in the semi-finals, a meeting they will be relishing after defeating Geelong 14.9 (93) to 8.4 (52) on the final day of the home and away season.<br \/>Torquay will play Anglesea in the other semi-final, after Anglesea defeated Modewarre 11.8 (74) to 8.11 (59) in the elimination final.<br \/>Anglesea Seniors coach Paul Nigro said his side had needed to be at their best to get the win over Modewarre.<br \/>&#8220;It was a good, hard fought game of footy. To get the win is very pleasing for the guys.&#8221;<br \/>Anglesea&#8217;s final position as fifth on the table is somewhat misleading, as only four points separated them from first-placed Geelong Amateur, who Anglesea also had a superior percentage to.<br \/>Nigro said it had been an exceptionally close season.<br \/>&#8220;There&#8217;s not much between the top five teams at all.&#8221;<br \/>Anglesea&#8217;s win over Modewarre ensures they are still in the hunt for the premiership, having last won it 20 years ago in 1999.<br \/>Modewarre gave a good account of themselves, and by the end of the third quarter were only one point behind Anglesea.<br \/>However, three goals in the final quarter helped Anglesea secure a 15 point victory.<br \/>Modewarre were similarly unlucky in the Reserves.<br \/>They narrowly lost the qualifying final to Barwon Heads in a low-scoring game that finished 6.5 (41) to 5.5 (35).<br \/>The two sides were level at half-time, but Barwon Heads then managed to score the only goal of the third quarter, and keep their nerve to take the win in the fourth.<br \/>They will play league-leaders Torquay in the semi-final next weekend.<br \/>The elimination final was a more one-sided affair, with Drysdale triumphing over Ocean Grove 10.8 (68) to 5.7 (37).<br \/>Drysdale finished fourth, some 20 points behind their semi-final opponents Modewarre.
