TONY Revell has been elected as the newest member of the Surf Coast Shire council.<\/p>\n

Cr Revell was one of six candidates in the Anglesea Ward by-election and was declared victorious by the Victorian Electoral Commission last week.<\/p>\n

The postal by-election to fill the extraordinary vacancy followed the resignation of Libby Coker, who was elected to the seat of Corangamite at May\u2019s federal election.<\/p>\n

Surf Coast Shire acting chief executive officer Anne Howard and shire mayor Rose Hodge formally swore in Cr Revell during a ceremony held at the shire\u2019s council chambers on Monday.<\/p>\n

Cr Revell said he felt honoured and humbled to become a councillor.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s certainly a position that I take very seriously, and I look forward to working with all of you in the months and years ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cr Hodge congratulated Cr Revell on his win.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re joining a wonderful team and you\u2019ve got a fantastic ward councillor (Margot Smith) to help you along,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Tony will be an absolute credit to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Revell received 23.55 per cent of first preference votes \u2013 113 votes more than the next most popular candidate, Raylene Fordham.<\/p>\n

After all preferences were distributed, Mr Revell received 62.24 per cent of all votes, ahead of Harry Rosson with 37.76 per cent.<\/p>\n

There were 4,531 formal votes and 136 informal votes in the by-election, with a voter turnout of 67.56 per cent.<\/p>\n

Voting was compulsory for voters who were on the state roll for this by-election, and state-enrolled voters who did not vote may be fined. Voters aged 70 or older and council-enrolled voters were encouraged to vote but will not be fined if they did not vote.<\/p>\n
