{"id":30003,"date":"2019-09-18T11:54:13","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T01:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=30003"},"modified":"2019-09-19T09:37:22","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T23:37:22","slug":"surf-coast-shire-welcomes-new-citizens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/surf-coast-shire-welcomes-new-citizens\/","title":{"rendered":"Surf Coast Shire welcomes new citizens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">THE Surf Coast Shire welcomed 11 people as new citizens this week as part of 2019 Australian Citizenship Day celebrations.<br \/>\nThe conferees from six countries \u2013 United States, United Kingdom, Sweden, Spain, Germany and Brazil \u2013 became Australian citizens as part of a ceremony at the council chambers in Torquay on Tuesday.<br \/>\nSurf Coast Shire mayor Rose Hodge said the ceremony was an opportunity to come together to acknowledge what&#8217;s great about being Australian.<br \/>\n&#8220;Citizenship ceremonies are always a highlight on our calendar.<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s special to see the smiles on the faces of our new citizens, who are so proud to receive citizenship in front of their family and friends.&#8221;<br \/>\nThis year&#8217;s Australian Citizenship Day was predicted to welcome the largest number of new citizens nationally since the inaugural Australian Citizenship Day in 2001.<br \/>\nThe Department of Home Affairs and local councils hosted 150 ceremonies across the country, with more than 8,000 people expected to become Australian citizens as part of the celebrations.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/immi.homeaffairs.gov.au\/citizenship\/celebrating-70-years-of-australian-citizenship\/australian-citizenship-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Australian Citizenship Day<\/a> provides an occasion for individuals, schools, community groups and organisations to reflect on the values of Australian citizenship and the contributions of citizens to local communities.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Surf Coast Shire welcomed 11 people as new citizens this week as part of 2019 Australian Citizenship Day celebrations.
