FOUNDATION 61 could soon operate two rehabilitation facilities in Mount Duneed if a planning amendment put forward by the City of Greater Geelong for a second centre is approved.<\/p>\n

The amendment outlines the prospect of a women\u2019s accommodation facility in Mount Duneed, with the initiative earmarked to house up to eight women at one time.<\/p>\n

Kardinia Ward councillor Pat Murnane said there was an absence of residential rehabilitation facilities in the Geelong region despite its high number of drug and alcohol affected community members.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cost is out of reach for most people, therefore treatment is often not sought.<\/p>\n

\u201cGeelong is fortunate to have Foundation 61 in our region, as it is offering an affordable option and achieving great outcomes for its guests.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe organisation\u2019s favourable success rate is a result of focusing on reconnecting people with their families and the community, as well as upskilling individuals to achieve employment once they are ready to rejoin society and give back to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amendment C401 seeks the proposed centre be built on vacant farming zoned land at 120 Russells Road. The area was previously home to a church and is not in use for farming purposes.<\/p>\n

Although the proposal would be subject to detailed conditions, Geelong Bruce Harwood said the vacant land had \u201cgreat potential\u201d to help vulnerable women recover in a safe and supportive environment, away from \u201cnegative distractions\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cFoundation 61 is doing great work in our community tackling the complex issue of drug and alcohol addiction. Residential services that specifically support women are sorely lacking in our region.\u201d<\/p>\n

The facility would be separate from the existing men\u2019s facility managed by Foundation 61 on Williams Road.<\/p>\n
