{"id":30159,"date":"2019-09-18T16:33:46","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T06:33:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=30159"},"modified":"2020-10-12T14:38:14","modified_gmt":"2020-10-12T04:38:14","slug":"city-backs-community-concern-about-train-stabling-location-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/city-backs-community-concern-about-train-stabling-location-2\/","title":{"rendered":"City backs community concern about train stabling location"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE City of Greater Geelong is backing community concern regarding plans to build a train stabling facility on 61 hectares of privately-owned farmland in Waurn Ponds, and is urging the state government to consider alternative locations. <\/p>\n<p>The council voted to make a submission to Amendment GC104 after Rail Projects Victoria \u2013 the state government body that wishes to compulsorily acquire the land \u2013 requested a change to the Greater Geelong Planning Scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The city is concerned that the proposed acquisition, development and use of the facility would affect operations at the historic \u201cCromer\u201d farm, labelling the decision as one that needed to be \u201ccarefully considered\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Kardinia Ward councillor Ron Nelson said while the city recognised a need for a train stabling facility in the Waurn Ponds area, he couldn\u2019t agree that the proposed acquisition \u2013 which would carve the farm in two \u2013 was appropriate. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve visited the family farm a couple of times and I don\u2019t believe this is the right location. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile this is a state government decision, council is committed to providing assistance and support to stakeholders by making a submission.
