TORQUAY Community House will hold a free gambling help workshop on October 8 to teach people how to support those with gambling problems.
\nMental Health First Aid (MFHA) is running the workshop as part of Gambling Harm Awareness Week.
\nThe workshop runs from 9am to 1pm and aims not only to equip attendees with the skills needed to help those with gambling problems, but also to destigmatise the issue.
\nThe workshop’s instructor Annie Harper says gambling can harm people in a lot of different ways.
\n\u201cThere are many types of gambling harm, including financial difficulties, relationship problems, work or study performance issues, and emotional and psychological distress.\u201d
\n\u201cGambling harm is often hidden and people feel uncomfortable talking about it. But talking is exactly what we need to do as a community to better understand it, break down stereotypes and misconceptions, and encourage those who are affected to seek support.\u201d
\nWith Gambling Harm Awareness Week focusing on the theme “Talk. Share. Support.”, people in the community are encouraged to share their personal experiences with gambling and help those affected.
\nMs Harper says this is vital because gambling effects more than the people directly involved.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s important to recognise gambling harm is a community issue and that we can all play a role in tackling it.”
\nShe says that both on a community and individual level it is important to be open and reserve judgement.
\n\u201cIf you are concerned about your gambling or someone else’s, talking about it is a good first step. Talking and listening without judgement signals that it\u2019s okay for those affected by gambling harm to reach out, to share their personal experiences, and to seek recovery.”
\nMorning tea and lunch will be provided with the workshop on Tuesday. It is one of 65 events that are being held across Victoria as part of Gambling Harm Awareness Week.
