THE Surf Coast Shire is holding a community drop in session next week to gather feedback about the future of Winchelsea’s Barwon River Playground.<\/p>\n

The playground was constructed in 2001, and has been well-used by locals since.<\/p>\n

It is now due for replacement as part of the council’s 2019\/20 Asset Renewal Program.<\/p>\n

At Tuesday’s council meeting, the council received a petition signed by 351 people requesting that the project be halted until the community is properly consulted.<\/p>\n

Surf Coast general manager of culture and community Chris Pike said he believed the community would continue to benefit from the playground.<\/p>\n

“We know the Barwon River playground is loved by locals and visitors to Winchelsea. Now that it’s due for replacement, we’ve been working with the community on options for new equipment.<\/p>\n

“We’ve worked with a group of locals to develop a draft concept for the playground. The aim is to provide a playground that’s fun for youngsters and a great spot for families”<\/p>\n

The playground’s distinctive artwork will also be retained.<\/p>\n

Mr Pike said the community will also have their say on how this artwork is used.<\/p>\n

“We’re working with the community on what’s next for the artwork. It could be installed on panels at the new playground, or perhaps it could be donated to a community group.<\/p>\n

“If you’re a local with a great idea on how it could be used, we’d love to hear it.”<\/p>\n

Working with a group of local stakeholders, the council has developed a draft concept for the playground’s renewal.<\/p>\n

In addition to a new play unit, this concept includes a basket swing, and tree planting within the play space.<\/p>\n

Construction on the playground is scheduled to begin in October or November this year.<\/p>\n

The drop in session on Monday, September 30 will begin at 10am and will allow people to view the designs and give their feedback.<\/p>\n
