{"id":30527,"date":"2019-10-03T00:45:48","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T14:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=30527"},"modified":"2019-10-02T11:55:55","modified_gmt":"2019-10-02T01:55:55","slug":"sustainable-house-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/sustainable-house-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Learn how to live smarter at Sustainable House Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOCALS can discover the many benefits of smarter homes and sustainable living from homeowners at this year\u2019s Sustainable House Day (SHD2019) on October 13.<\/p>\n<p>SHD2019 is shaping up to be the most successful open day in its 11-year history, with 15 quality homes and gardens opening across Geelong and surrounds, showcasing something for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>The program includes new homes, renovations, retrofits and works in progress.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a unique opportunity to gather insights and information about the what, why and how to improve the enjoyment and efficiency of your home.<\/p>\n<p>Outside hasn\u2019t been forgotten \u2013 inspiration comes from productive and native gardens in suburban and rural settings, and there is even an urban farm.<\/p>\n<p>Event co-ordinator Vicki Perrett said this year\u2019s program was their most diverse, with properties opening in Inverleigh, Batesford, Norlane, Hamlyn Heights, Newcomb, Highton, Portarlington, Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale, Torquay and Wensleydale.<\/p>\n<p>Organised by not-for-profit organisation Geelong Sustainability, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geelongsustainability.org.au\/shd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Sustainable House Day<\/a> gives people the chance to inspect exemplar homes firsthand, to see the materials and technologies used in real-world settings, to talk directly with homeowners and to access free technical advice from onsite experts.<\/p>\n<p>Homeowners are keen to share their experiences and insights, and pass on information to visitors about what they have done to make their homes more comfortable to live in, cheaper to run and better for the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Have a chat to the subject matter experts who will be on hand at every property, including architects, designers, builders, product suppliers, solar installers, permaculture and gardening gurus.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re on a quest to make your home more sustainable or your garden more productive be sure to register soon and start planning your day.<\/p>\n<p>Have a close look at the styles and features of the 15 houses to decide which ones to visit and register to receive the property addresses.<\/p>\n<p>To help plan your day and pre-register, head to <a title=\"geelongsustainability.org.au\/shd2019\" href=\"http:\/\/geelongsustainability.org.au\/shd2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>geelongsustainability.org.au\/shd2019<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Entry is by $2 donation at each of the participating properties.<\/p>\n<p>For regular updates follow the SHD Facebook page (<strong>@SHDgeelong<\/strong>) or pick up postcards with information about SHD2019 from various council customer service centres, local libraries, neighbourhood houses and the Humans in Geelong Expo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LOCALS can discover the many benefits of smarter homes and sustainable living from homeowners at this year\u2019s Sustainable House Day (SHD2019) on October 13.
