{"id":30940,"date":"2019-10-17T00:00:11","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T14:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=30940"},"modified":"2020-10-07T13:21:57","modified_gmt":"2020-10-07T03:21:57","slug":"bells-boulevard-undergoes-safety-makeover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/bells-boulevard-undergoes-safety-makeover\/","title":{"rendered":"Bells Boulevard undergoes safety makeover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WORKS to improve safety for drivers and cyclists who travel on Bells Boulevard at Jan Juc are underway.<\/p>\n<p>An approximate 2.2 kilometre stretch of the thoroughfare \u2013 between the Great Ocean Road and Bones Road intersections \u2013 is scheduled to undergo a full pavement rebuild to improve its strength, durability and longevity.<\/p>\n<p>Drainage works are currently in progress, while shoulder widening and pavement works are earmarked to begin next month.<\/p>\n<p>The road is believed to attract 1600 vehicles per day, with numbers increasing across summer and during the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach April competition.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Roads, Road Safety and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Jaala Pulford visited the worksite last Thursday to see \u201cfirsthand\u201d how the upgrade would deliver benefits for both the Surf Coast community and its tourists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBells Boulevard is an important connection for the local community as well as thousands of visitors who flock to Bells Beach each year \u2013 and these works will ensure it is smoother, stronger and safer for everyone,\u201d Ms Pulford said.<\/p>\n<p>Bells Boulevard is also a popular cycling route, with the road forming part of the annual Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race\u2019s course.<\/p>\n<p>Member for South Barwon Darren Cheeseman said the state government\u2019s $425 million investment in maintenance jobs across Victoria \u2013 which will see around 1500 kilometres of regional roads upgraded \u2013 was vital to achieving community safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur massive maintenance blitz is improving the roads that our communities rely on, just like Bells Boulevard,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Works will pause over the Christmas and New Year period to limit disruption and delays. Major road reconstruction will commence in 2020. Works will take place from Monday to Friday \u2013 between 7am-5.30pm \u2013 and are expected to be completed by the end of March.<\/p>\n<p>Locals are advised that speed and lane restrictions may be in place at different times to keep drivers and workers safe.
