WOMEN from across the country will gather tomorrow evening (Friday, October 25) to call out violence and celebrate unity.<\/p>\n
Hosted by the City of Greater Geelong at the Geelong Trades Hall, \u201cReclaim the Night\u201d has been designed to allow women the freedom to \u201cbe seen\u201d and \u201cbe heard\u201d on issues surrounding their safety, both at home and in public spaces.<\/p>\n
Councillor Sarah Mansfield, who chairs the city\u2019s inclusive and diverse community portfolio, said the city \u2013 as well as other high-profile organisations \u2013 played a key role in addressing gender-based violence.<\/p>\n
\u201cGender-based violence is a major, and unfortunately growing problem, in our community. Its roots lie in harmful gender norms that shape attitudes and behaviours, which in turn can result in abuse and violence.<\/p>\n
\u201cReclaim the Night is an opportunity to raise awareness about these issues, and hopefully contribute to the broader cultural changes required to make an impact on this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n
The protest is set to coincide with the Barwon Month of Action Launch, which will be followed by a night walk through the streets of Geelong where participants will pay homage to the women and children who have lost their lives to violence.<\/p>\n
Speakers at the event include Cr Sarah Mansfield, Sergeant Natasha Powles (Victoria Police) and Adele Smith (Geelong Trades Hall president). The city\u2019s director of community life Robyn Stevens said she encouraged women and supporters to come along and take part in Reclaim the Night 2019.<\/p>\n
Reclaim the Night will begin at 6pm at the Geelong Trades Hall (enter via the rear lane at Smythes Place, off Little Ryrie Street) tomorrow (Friday, October 25).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
