WHILE Christmas is regarded as a time of celebration, some people find it an unavoidable reminder of their financial burdens. <\/p>\n
Torquay Food Aid (TFA) is looking to shift this attitude next month so that those in the community who are struggling to make ends meet feel supported during what is often an expensive period.<\/p>\n
Although TFA\u2019s team of volunteers offer a food collection service every Wednesday afternoon, this festive season they\u2019re asking locals to donate Christmas treats to accompany their annual Christmas hampers, which will be distributed on December 18.<\/p>\n
Torquay Food Aid secretary Lois Gill said the initiative depended on donations during December to keep up with demand.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe buy the basics – we will buy a pudding, cake, custard and ham – but we like to give out other bags of treats and we\u2019re totally dependent on organisations, groups and individuals to donate them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we don\u2019t get enough, we have to buy it.\u201d<\/p>\n
There are about 70 people who have registered for supplies from TFA this Christmas, with more expected to drop in over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
Ms Gill emphasised that regular clients would be prioritised.<\/p>\n
The charity\u2019s new chair Michael Buckley said some people experiencing short-term hardship (including job loss or marriage breakdown) were often too proud to seek help.<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of people would be surprised that there are so many people in Torquay that need help.\u201d<\/p>\n
If you would like to donate, drop your goods off to Ryan\u2019s IGA, Spring Creek Community House, or the Anglican, Baptist or Catholic church in Torquay.<\/p>\n
Alternatively, phone Mr Buckley on 0409 614 630 who will collect your donation\/s. Torquay Food Aid \u2013 located behind the Surf Coast Medical Centre (100 Surf Coast Highway, Torquay) will be accepting donations until December 17 where Ms Gill will be packing goods from 10am-noon.<\/p>\n
