THE back panel of a Geelong CDC bus has been splashed with a friendly reminder about the benefits of drinking water as part of a campaign aimed at discouraging the consumption of sugary drinks. <\/p>\n
A partnership between the City of Greater Geelong, neighbouring G21 councils, Barwon Health and other health organisations, the \u201cChoose Water Every Day\u201d initiative hopes to promote water as the drink of choice for residents and visitors to the region, with the word \u201cwater\u201d spelt in 11 different languages on the public transport service. <\/p>\n
About 35 per cent of adults from greater Geelong consume beverages such as soft drink or sports drinks either daily, once or several times a week, the city\u2019s Municipal Health and Wellbeing Plan 2018-2021 revealed.<\/p>\n
It also found that only one in 10 Geelong adults drink more than the recommended two litres of water per day. <\/p>\n
Excessive amounts of soft drink can lead to excess weight gain and obesity, which may increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancers and tooth decay. <\/p>\n
Cr Pat Murnane, chair of the city\u2019s community health, wellbeing and safety portfolio, said he encouraged everyone to \u201cheed\u201d the message and choose water every day.<\/p>\n
\u201cStaying hydrated is essential for good health, along with eating well and fitting in 30 minutes of exercise each day. <\/p>\n
\u201cDehydration can lead to thirst, headaches, weakness, tiredness and slow reactions. Drinking about eight glasses of water each day is the best way to stay hydrated, and it won\u2019t lead to the serious health problems caused by sugary drinks.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Choose Water Every Day message is being promoted on social media and via community billboards, local radio and events throughout the region.<\/p>\n
