{"id":32757,"date":"2019-12-22T14:04:12","date_gmt":"2019-12-22T04:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=32757"},"modified":"2019-12-23T08:45:22","modified_gmt":"2019-12-22T22:45:22","slug":"thirteenth-beach-fairhaven-closed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/thirteenth-beach-fairhaven-closed\/","title":{"rendered":"Large swells close Thirteenth Beach and Fairhaven beaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LIFE Saving Victoria is urging beachgoers to exercise caution in the water in coastal areas today with large swells predicted to make conditions hazardous at beaches across the state.<\/p>\n<p>Several surf beaches have closed, including beaches at Thirteenth Beach and Fairhaven beach, with Victorians being urged to rethink plans to swim in the ocean with large waves predicted.<\/p>\n<p>Life Saving Victoria general manager of lifesaving services Simon White encouraged people to consider the power of the ocean and that today\u2019s conditions were particularly unfavourable.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cLarge swells and rough weather conditions forecast for ocean beaches today could make it difficult for lifesavers to ensure the safety of swimmers,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWe\u2019re urging people to be cautious around the water and to carefully consider their own capabilities. If you are unsure of the conditions, please speak with the lifesavers on the patrolled beaches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The warning follows the death of a man believed to have been rock fishing at Separation Creek early this morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cToday\u2019s tragic incident at Separation Creek is a sad reminder of how dangerous the ocean can be,\u201d Mr White said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">He said although the rocks might seem to be a safe spot for fishing, the risk of slipping or being swept into the surf was always there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u201cDrowning deaths by unintentional water entry, such as slips, trips and falls, was the most common activity before drowning in Victoria last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cRock fishers should always wear a lifejacket, and remember to fish with a friend, always check the conditions, wear light safety clothing and cleated shoes and carry safety gear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LIFE Saving Victoria is urging beachgoers to exercise caution in the water in coastal areas today with large swells predicted to make conditions hazardous at beaches across the state.
