NEW footpaths have recently been built in busy pedestrian areas in Torquay.<\/p>\n

The paths have been laid on Baines Crescent and Beach Road, and between Alleyne Avenue and Kooringa Place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Surf Coast Shire councillor Brian McKiterick said considering how many young families live in the area, these new footpaths are particularly key to pedestrian safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
“There were previously no footpaths in these locations, so you’d often see parents pushing prams and kids on scooters along the side of busy Beach Road.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
“I know these footpaths have made a big difference for residents \u2013 including the many young families \u2013 in the Surf View Estate area. It’s now much safer and easier for locals to walk to the library, swimming pool and shops.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Cr McKiterick also said he was pleased to have the paths finished ahead of Christmas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
“The residents here had been calling on council to install footpaths, so<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
I’m pleased they’re now complete in time for the summer holiday period.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The project’s total cost was $224,000. The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and the Surf Coast Shire each contributed $100,000, with the rest being provided by people whose properties adjoin the new footpaths.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Early next year, a pedestrian refuge will be built on the corner of Beach Road and Baines Crescent. Bike racks will also be installed.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
