{"id":33365,"date":"2020-01-16T00:00:07","date_gmt":"2020-01-15T14:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=33365"},"modified":"2020-10-07T11:43:42","modified_gmt":"2020-10-07T01:43:42","slug":"beyond-blue-extends-its-hand-in-bushfire-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/beyond-blue-extends-its-hand-in-bushfire-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond Blue extends its hand in bushfire crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beyond Blue has developed new information about mental health and natural disasters to support people living in bushfire affected areas.  <\/p>\n<p>The bushfires and mental health webpage, which can be found on the Beyond Blue website, offers practical advice on dealing with the emotional effects of bushfire, information about the signs and symptoms of emotional distress, links to useful resources and tips for supporting children and young people.  <\/p>\n<p>Beyond Blue chief executive officer Georgie Harman said signs of distress can take months or even years to emerge following a traumatic event, but it\u2019s \u201cnever too early\u201d to get informed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, many people need the basics \u2013 shelter, food, water, fuel, cash and physical safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOthers may be returning to their affected communities. These are stressful times and it\u2019s important we\u2019re aware of how these things can affect our mental health, both in the immediate and longer term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very normal to struggle with difficult thoughts and feelings during and after a disaster like this, and these feelings can be intense and confusing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said these feelings are at their most severe in the first week after a traumatic event but in most cases fade within one month.  <\/p>\n<p>Common reactions to disasters include:<br \/>\n\u2022 Feeling overwhelmed, numb or detached<br \/>\n\u2022 Constant tearfulness and intrusive memories<br \/>\n\u2022 Irritability, difficulty sleeping or dreaming about the event<br \/>\n\u2022 Using alcohol or drugs to cope<br \/>\n\u2022 Constantly questioning the actions taken during the disaster<\/p>\n<p>Ms Harman said people who experience common reactions for more than one month should talk to a GP or mental health professional.
