With warmer weather upon us and beach fun becoming increasingly popular, it\u2019s the \u201cpawfect\u201d time to consider \u201cdoggie and human etiquette\u201d.<\/p>\n
Here are some tips so you can have more doggie fun this spring and summer.<\/p>\n
Long lead training is your number training tool to develop doggie recall.<\/p>\n
Use a five-metre long flat lead to create a sense of freedom, teach boundaries and keep it fun. Good recall helps keep your dog, you and others safe. Aim for at least 90 per cent recall response.<\/p>\n
Set dogs up for success by creating positive, enjoyable experiences.<\/p>\n
If your pooch is nervous, don\u2019t go to a busy off-leash beach. If your dog is not social, choose trail walks or runs on a long lead, quieter beaches and times, or try a dog training class.<\/p>\n
Form an extended doggie pack and regularly walk with dogs who are calm, friendly role models. Doggie friends should have good recall skills, listen to their humans and be a good match for your dog\u2019s energy levels.<\/p>\n
Dogs don\u2019t have to meet and greet! Instead, aim for dogs co-existing in the same space. Redirect doggie attention to other activities, such as ball play, so your dog doesn\u2019t become too focused on other dog(s).<\/p>\n
Walk your dog on and off lead. Put your dog back on lead or recall them if you spot a dog on lead ahead or if your dog(s) might want to go run up to them. The other dog may be nervous or reactive, so play it safe for all. Once a safe distance away, resume off leash activities.<\/p>\n
Stay present and connected by focusing on your dog and surroundings, stay off mobile devices and don’t wear earphones\/headsets.<\/p>\n
Above all, have fun, show consideration for others, follow dog rules and regulations and pick up after your pooch!<\/p>\n
