{"id":33495,"date":"2020-01-16T00:52:46","date_gmt":"2020-01-15T14:52:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=33495"},"modified":"2020-01-15T12:59:44","modified_gmt":"2020-01-15T02:59:44","slug":"geelong-cats-bushfire-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/geelong-cats-bushfire-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Geelong Cats join in bushfire support efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Geelong Cats have announced a range of initiatives to provide support to to communities affected by the bushfire crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The AFL club is backing the just-revealed State of Origin game in February and a $2.5 million donation from the league and all 18 clubs.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Geelong Cats chief executive officer Brian Cook said the club as a whole had been moved by the crisis and were eager to assist in any way they could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a club with such a strong connection to community, it has been with much sadness we have watched the scenes of devastation and loss affecting so many parts of Australia currently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, we have also been inspired and moved by the incredible acts of bravery, compassion and mateship shown by our emergency services heroes and everyday Australians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it will take a significant amount of time for these communities to get back on their feet, we want them all to know they have our support and we\u2019ll be doing all we can to assist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The club\u2019s initiatives include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A $50,000 donation from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geelongcats.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Geelong Cats<\/a>, to be combined with contributions from the AFL and other clubs for an overall $2.5 million donation from the industry<\/li>\n<li>Participation of Geelong Cats players in the AFL State of Origin game at Marvel Stadium on February 28<\/li>\n<li>Staff volunteering to assist with humanitarian response<\/li>\n<li>Player-led fundraising initiatives both online and at events<\/li>\n<li>Fundraising event support from the club\u2019s hospitality arm, Higher Mark, and<\/li>\n<li>Tickets at a yet-to-be-determined Cats match in 2020 to be provided to affected families and emergency service workers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The club will also work with the Essendon Football Club to continue the support of the communities through the coming Powercor Country Festival games in Colac and at the MCG.<\/p>\n<p>A percentage of merchandise and Charles &amp; Co caf\u00e9 sales from Saturday\u2019s Family Festival at GMHBA Stadium was also donated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Geelong Cats have announced a range of initiatives to provide support to to communities affected by the bushfire crisis.
