{"id":33547,"date":"2020-01-16T09:00:47","date_gmt":"2020-01-15T23:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=33547"},"modified":"2020-01-16T10:13:07","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T00:13:07","slug":"mt-duneed-rocks-to-paul-kelly-and-cold-chisel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/mt-duneed-rocks-to-paul-kelly-and-cold-chisel\/","title":{"rendered":"Mt Duneed rocks to Paul Kelly and Cold Chisel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">THE latest running of the popular A Day On The Green concert series at Mt Duneed Estate featured all-Australian headliners, with Paul Kelly and then Cold Chisel taking turns in entertaining the 15,000-strong crowd.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">While there was no doubt the majority of the audience was there to see Cold Chisel tour their latest album, Kelly took command of the stage when he took over from opening acts Magic Dirt and Birds of Tokyo.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Starting solo, playing just his acoustic guitar, Kelly had the audience almost in a trance, as the stage slowly filled with his backing band.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Running through his extensive catalogue, Kelly alternated between stripped back versions of his best-known works and rollicking rockers, without ever losing control of the crowd.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33550\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33550\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-33550\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/01\/KELLY01-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33550\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul Kelly with backing singers Vika and Linda at Mt Duneed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Long-time collaborator Ash Naylor led the backing band, drawn from the cream of Australian musical talent, including drummer \u2018Lucky\u2019 Luscombe and backing singers Vika and Linda.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Kelly\u2019s set included a powerful version of land rights celebration anthem \u2018From Little Things Big Things Grow\u2019 that confirmed his mastery of his craft, as well as \u2018Dumb Things\u2019, \u2018To Her Door\u2019, \u2018Leaps and Bounds\u2019, and \u2018Deeper Water\u2019, before surrendering lead vocals to Vika Bull for her rendition of his domestic violence protest \u2018Sweet Guy\u2019, eventually concluding with the de facto Christmas carol \u2018How To Make Gravy\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">With the crowd suitably warmed up, there was an eruption of noise as Jimmy Barnes led his bandmates onto the stage, hitting the ground running with \u2018Standing On The Outside\u2019, to the audible delight of the audience.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">A blend of old favourites and tracks from the new Blood Moon album, with the old stagers expertly varying the tempo and intensity of the set to ensure the crowd followed wherever they we led throughout the two hour set.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">While some of the songs were nearing middle-age, Barnes, Moss and Walker were happy to refresh them for the tour, most noticeably a reggae-influenced presentation of \u2018Forever Now\u2019 that gave it a new lease of life, while staying true to its history.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">With newer tracks forming the second half of the set, after a roaring rendition of \u2018Khe Sanh\u2019, Cold Chisel proved they can still produce the goods, even if they are old enough to be parents, or even grand parents, to their faithful audiences.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE latest running of the popular A Day On The Green concert series at Mt Duneed Estate featured all-Australian headliners, with Paul Kelly and then Cold Chisel taking turns in entertaining the 15,000-strong crowd.
