{"id":33590,"date":"2020-01-23T00:00:20","date_gmt":"2020-01-22T14:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=33590"},"modified":"2020-01-21T16:00:29","modified_gmt":"2020-01-21T06:00:29","slug":"lions-australia-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/lions-australia-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Lions to hold Australia Day celebrations in Taylor Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Torquay Lions Club will be holding their annual Australia Day celebrations at Taylor Park on Sunday, January 26.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Club president John Bell said as well as the traditional concert, there will be plenty on offer for all who attend the free event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;There will be entertainment for the community before the Citizenship Ceremony where we witness a number of people being naturalised as Australians.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;And, of course, the Lions barbecue trailer and barbecues in Taylor Park will be fired up to provide free sausages to all comers, and soft drinks, tea and coffee, for those who want them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>The ceremony frequently draws a mix of locals and visitors, with about 300 people attending last year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Dr Bronwyn King will be the Australia Day Ambassador and guest speaker.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Dr King is best known for being the founder and chief executive officer of Tobacco Free Portfolios, a not-for-profit organisation that works with some of the world&#8217;s largest companies to move towards tobacco-free finance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Lions work with the Surf Coast Shire council to hold the event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Surf Coast Shire&#8217;s Australia Day Community Awards will also be held, with awards being given for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Mr Bell said the event will appeal to many.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;The Taylor Park Australia Day celebrations are a perfect occasion for us to greet new citizens and provide Australian entertainment for locals and visitors on this most important day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>People are encouraged to be sun-smart and bring their own chairs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>The concert will begin at 10am.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Torquay Lions Club will be holding their annual Australia Day celebrations at Taylor Park on Sunday, January 26.
