THE Surf Coast Repair Caf\u00e9 is returning, providing people with a chance to bring their broken goods to the volunteers at Anglesea Memorial Hall and have them repaired.<\/p>\n

\n

Jo Murray helped found the Surf Coast branch four years ago. She says the caf\u00e9 looks to change the mindset of replace rather than repair.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do is stop this throwaway culture of everyone just thinking \u2018something\u2019s broken, something\u2019s worn out, I don\u2019t know how to fix it, I\u2019m just going to throw it away and buy a new one\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ms Murray says the volunteers at the caf\u00e9 have a wide range of skills and interests.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got people from the community who just love tinkering. Whether they like sewing or like fixing electrical items or mechanical things or bikes or jewellery or clothing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe have one woman who is in her eighties and was an arts and crafts teacher and became a silversmith. She\u2019s just a complete treasure. We have an aerospace engineer and an aeronautical engineer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ms Murray says if people were in doubt of whether someone can fix their item, they should bring it along.<\/div>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re just ordinary people who come along and love helping people fix things.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWhen something comes through the door the volunteers just love it, because it\u2019s another opportunity for them to have a go at fixing things.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Knowing this passion for repairing can be infectious, the caf\u00e9 also includes a Kid\u2019s Tinkering Zone for children between three and 15.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The zone was introduced last year and was hugely popular. There are tools provided as well as items for the children to fix.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Repair Caf\u00e9 asks for donations to help them cover the costs of running the days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The caf\u00e9 will open for the first time in 2020 on Sunday, February 2.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It will continue to open on the first or second Sunday of every month except June.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
