	{"id":34172,"date":"2020-01-31T10:59:43","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T00:59:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=34172"},"modified":"2020-01-31T14:35:52","modified_gmt":"2020-01-31T04:35:52","slug":"porky-and-the-brine-about-bbqs-hazy-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/porky-and-the-brine-about-bbqs-hazy-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Porky and the Brine are ready to heat up Hazy Days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COMPETITIVE barbecue team Porky and the Brine will be in hot form at Beckley Park this weekend as they take part in the Hazy Days festival.<\/p>\n<p>Brett Grey from Porky and the Brine got into the hobby about 10 years ago while serving in the army.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Four years ago, a friend introduced me to the low and slow style of barbecue cooking and I was hooked,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I then started making my own barbecue rubs and cooking over fire in the reverse flow offset.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We launched our own rub brand two years ago and around the same time i started to follow the Australian competitive barbecue scene.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a Rookie Rumble comp for team that have never competed before and we entered it and had some great results, we knew then we were hooked.\u00a0 My team-mate and I loved the travel, preparing the meat for cooking, no sleep, and the competition &#8211; and a few beers as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34223\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34223\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34223 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/01\/IMG_5059.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/01\/IMG_5059.jpg 480w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/01\/IMG_5059-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34223\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Porky and the Brine have now competed in two different states and are competing at this year\u2019s Meatstock.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite their success, Mr Grey said Porky and the Brine knew barbecue was an unsustainable hobby without the support of local business.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I approached\u00a0 Bruce and Mike from <a href=\"https:\/\/aboutbbqs.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">about bbqs and fireplaces<\/a> about a sponsorship.\u00a0 They jumped on board and gave us an amazing Oklahoma Joe reverse flow offset and a Char-Grill kamado, which we use when we compete. it was amazing to have that support and such great cooking equipment to work with straight out of the gates.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have now competed in two different states and are competing at this year\u2019s Meatstock, which is Australia\u2019s biggest barbecue festival<\/p>\n<div>In turn, Mr Grey has helped put together Geelong&#8217;s own barbecue festival, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hazydaysbbq.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Hazy Days<\/a>, which will be held Beckley Park on Saturday, February 1 and Sunday, February 2.<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;In the future we are hoping to work towards becoming one of Australia\u2019s top 10 teams, and hold cooking demos to help people learn the art of smoking.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>about barbecues and fireplaces is at 31 Baines Crescent, Torquay.
