{"id":34402,"date":"2020-02-06T00:57:21","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T14:57:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=34402"},"modified":"2020-02-05T11:08:30","modified_gmt":"2020-02-05T01:08:30","slug":"ds-club-celebrates-60-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/ds-club-celebrates-60-years\/","title":{"rendered":"D&#8217;s Club celebrates 60 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A QUIRKY part of Torquay\u2019s social history celebrated its 60th anniversary last week.<\/p>\n<p>About 40 members of The D\u2019s Club dressed in their formal attire \u2013 black jacket, bow tie and shorts (shirt optional) \u2013 and gathered at the Torquay Hotel for an afternoon of drinks and many, many stories from their six decades of existence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter 60 years, one would say that\u2019s time for retirement and relaxation\u2026 and 60 years is a bloody long time,\u201d club member Adrian McKenzie said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34405\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34405\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34405\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/IMG_2554_88155-e1580864743363.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members dressed in black jackets, bow ties and shorts &#8211; shirts were optional.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Forming in the early days of Torquay\u2019s surfing history and loosely associated with the Torquay SLSC, The D\u2019s Club has no clubroom \u2013 just a door salvaged from a shack at Boot Hill that is carried around \u2013 no committee and no functions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did have a brick, and the brick came from Nairn\u2019s Dairy \u2013 quite a few years ago, when we used to have the Sunday morning barrels, we drank five 18-gallon barrels on a long weekend in two hours, and that\u2019s a record,\u201d Mr McKenzie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyhow, we left the brick in the hands of Peter Nairn, but of course he passed away just recently, and we\u2019ve discovered he\u2019s taken the brick to Heaven with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34403\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34403\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/IMG_2549_86859-e1580864768770.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The D&#8217;s Club has been gathering annually since 1960.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A QUIRKY part of Torquay\u2019s social history celebrated its 60th anniversary last week.
