MAJOR roadworks recently began on Fischer Street and Coombes Road, with closures scheduled for the latter.<\/p>\n
From Monday, February 17 onwards, the section of Coombes Road between Ghazeepore Road and Anglesea Road roundabout will be closed from around 7am-5pm to everyone except locals. Speed limits set to 40kmh.<\/p>\n
The works are expected to continue for approximately 12 weeks.<\/p>\n
Surf Coast Shire councillor Brian McKiterick said the works were much needed, despite creating a temporary inconvenience.<\/p>\n
“Regular users would be aware that Coombes Road experiences increasingly high traffic volume and it is time to upgrade the road.<\/p>\n
“Due to the extent of the work, the road will be closed to through traffic and diversions will be in place, so we appeal to drivers to allow extra time and show extra caution, care and patience.”<\/p>\n
The $1.5 million works are set to increase the road’s sealed width from six metres to nine.<\/p>\n
Drainage improvements will also be completed.<\/p>\n
The works have been jointly funded by Regional Roads Victoria’s Fixing Country Roads Program, the federal government’s Blackspot Program, and council allocations.<\/p>\n
Fischer Street is being smoothened.<\/p>\n
These works will take about four to six weeks to finish.<\/p>\n
Cr McKiterick said these works would similarly improve safety.<\/p>\n
“This section of road is in poor condition and is failing in sections. The works will make the road smoother and safer for all road users.<\/p>\n
“The first section to be resurfaced will be between Beach Road and Cowrie Road. Once this is complete, the contractors will move to the section between Cowrie Road and Darian Road.”<\/p>\n
There will be no vehicle access from Cowrie Road and Central Avenue to Fischer Street when works are being undertaken in this section.<\/p>\n
These works are being funded by the Surf Coast Shire council as part of its asset renewal program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
