{"id":34559,"date":"2020-02-13T00:00:01","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T14:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=34559"},"modified":"2020-10-07T09:56:10","modified_gmt":"2020-10-06T23:56:10","slug":"wreck2reef-swimmers-challenge-the-wind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/wreck2reef-swimmers-challenge-the-wind\/","title":{"rendered":"Wreck2Reef swimmers challenge the wind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BY HANNAH KENNY AND KLAUS NANNESTAD <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PEOPLE of all ages and abilities swam Half Moon Bay on Saturday for the 11th annual Wreck2Reef. <\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the Indented Head Yacht Club, the event raises funds each year for the club\u2019s Young Tackers Program. <\/p>\n<p>Choppy conditions proved difficult for those out on the water, but some impressive times were achieved by swimmers, particularly in the 1.2-kilometre open water swim classic. <\/p>\n<p>Sofia Piaia won the female race while also being in the 17 and under category. She swam to victory in 16 minutes and 46 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>The battle for second was close, with Samantha Cain finishing in 16 minutes and 56 seconds, just two seconds in front of third-placed Caitlin Huell.<\/p>\n<p>In a post-swim interview uploaded to Wreck2Reef\u2019s Instagram, Cain said the race was \u201creally enjoyable\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was obviously a little bit difficult going one way with the chop and then coming back. (It) was pretty nice to come back with it and then (it was) pretty much a hard slog all the way back to the beach \u2013 it was good, it was enjoyable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robbe Dilissen won the men\u2019s swim by more than half-a-minute, finishing in just 15 minutes and 37 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>The event\u2019s diversity was highlighted by the next two swimmers to cross the line, as second place went to Mark Stone, who was also in the 50-59 category, and third to Cooper Edwards, who was racing in the 17 and under category. <\/p>\n<p>City of Greater Geelong councillor Jim Mason, who competed on the day, said it was a \u201cwonderful feeling\u201d to return to dry earth again once the paddling was over. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very rewarding and it is a relief also,\u201d he said after the swim. \u201cIt was easier coming home with the waves behind me.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY HANNAH KENNY AND KLAUS NANNESTAD PEOPLE of all ages and abilities swam Half Moon Bay on Saturday for the 11th annual Wreck2Reef.
