THE Surf Coast Shire council will hold a series of business and community engagement workshops next month as part of their Prosperous Places Project to help shape the future of the region’s economy.<\/p>\n

The project looks at existing and emerging business to understand how they can help commercial growth going forth.<\/p>\n

Cr David Bell said the workshops would provide a chance for people to share and enhance their understanding of local commerce.<\/p>\n

“The Surf Coast Shire has a unique economy, with thriving non-traditional sectors such as surfing, tourism and creative industries. The prevalence of home-based businesses is also significant.<\/p>\n

“Given our growing population, we want to understand what types of jobs are needed now and in years to come so young people and existing residents have an opportunity to live and work here if they wish.”<\/p>\n

Prosperous Places is also concerned with improving quality of life.<\/p>\n

Cr Bell said it was important to maintain the area’s identity while growing its commerce.<\/p>\n

“The Surf Coast Shire is a place where people want to live, work and visit.<\/p>\n

“Ultimately we want to strike the right balance where we continue to see innovative businesses and skilled people with great job opportunities \u2013 all while retaining the coastal character and hinterland charm that our towns and communities are renowned for.”<\/p>\n

Separate engagement sessions will be held for businesses and community.<\/p>\n

These sessions will help shape the strategy that will plan the Surf Coast Shire’s future as a place to work, live and visit.<\/p>\n

The first community engagement session will be held at Caf\u00e9 La Hoot in Winchelsea on March 4 from 10am-noon. Others will be held at Surf Coast Sport and Recreation Centre in Torquay on March 17, Anglesea Memorial Hall on March 18, Lorne Community House on March 24, and Deans Marsh Community Hall on March 25.<\/p>\n

People can drop in at any time throughout these sessions.<\/p>\n

The first business engagement session will be held at Happy Spaces in Torquay on March 3 from 8:30-10am. Further ones will then be held at Great Ocean Road Resort in Anglesea on March 11 and Cumberland Lorne Resort on March 12.<\/p>\n
