UNITING Church supporters in Aireys Inlet are again pulling out their frying pans and practising their flipping skills in readiness for this year\u2019s Pancake Day.<\/p>\n

Also known as Shrove Tuesday, this is the last day before the start of Lent, a period of fasting, prayer and reflection in the run-up to Easter. It references the old tradition of using up all the luxury goodies in the pantry, such as flour, butter and eggs, before the Lenten period of abstinence.<\/p>\n

The funds raised will to support the work done by Uniting Barwon<\/em><\/a>, the community services organization of the Uniting Church for the Geelong region. This organisation provides support for people in need of care, emergency financial help and crisis housing support.<\/p>\n

Through its service centres in Grovedale, Norlane and Winchelsea, Uniting Barwon makes sure local people have the basic necessities of food, clothing, back-to-school expenses and provides support with travel costs. It provides financial counselling and supports those who are homeless or in the danger of becoming homeless, suffering from drug or alcohol addictions or mental illness.<\/p>\n

The Surf Coast community is invited to come along to the Aireys Inlet Community Hall on Tuesday, February 25 between 11am-4pm to enjoy delicious pancakes, a cup of tea or coffee and some great company.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always get great support for our event \u2013 the pancakes are popular and people love supporting such a worthy cause,\u201d said one of the event organisers, Mary Bremner.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year, for something different, we are offering fruit salad as a healthy pancake topping.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since 2002, Pancake Day has raised more than $2 million for local communities across Victoria and Tasmania.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
