THANKS to the community’s support, the Anglesea & District War Memorial Committee is looking at starting work on the memorial later this year.<\/p>\n

The Anglesea & District War Memorial Appeal is almost halfway to its $65,000 fundraising target.<\/p>\n

Committee member Adrian Hunter said the committee was consequently “going to aim at September” to start building it.<\/p>\n

However, he said it was important that efforts continued towards the fundraising target so the project kept moving forwards.<\/p>\n

“We’re still looking for some grants from different organisations and we’re still looking for people to donate. Every fifty dollars counts, I say.<\/p>\n

“We’re just working on the breakdown of our costing now, and at our next meeting we want to be able to say ‘Let’s go ahead and get it done.’ There might be some things we’re able to do until later but overall it’s starting to look very positive.”<\/p>\n

In addition to raising further funds, the committee is also encouraging people to nominate names for the war memorial.<\/p>\n

The memorial will include the names of people from who lived within about 15 kilometres of either the Anglesea or Aireys Inlet Post Office on a permanent or part-time basis for at least 10 years. They must have served during a period of conflict or peacekeeping.<\/p>\n

There are presently almost 400 names for inclusion. This includes 133 people who served in World War I, 234 who served in World War II and 24 from the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n

There are also names off people who served in Afghanistan, the Korean War and the Malayan Emergency.<\/p>\n

Most names have come from records, with about 50 of these names coming from nominations.<\/p>\n
