Torquay lightweight boxer Euan Kennedy was runner-up, losing by a controversial split decision; but 17-year-old Michael Cordner became the new middleweight champion after taking the decision out of the judge\u2019s hands, winning by KO in round one after knocking down his Lillydale opponent three times.<\/p>\n
Torquay trainer Ashley Lynch said: \u201cMichael’s outstanding performance had his opponent hurt after the first punch. He then finished with veteran poise.\u201d<\/p>\n
Michael has been invited to enter the Australian titles in November and intends to turn Pro in 2018.<\/p>\n
\u201cBoth lads are true warriors, who over the last three months have been sparring well with proboxers from Geelong,\u201d Lynch said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMichael Cordner is a fine character and great role model for younger kids.<\/p>\n
\u201cEuan Kennedy has come such a long way in such a short time. He has only been boxing a year and a half and has already had a title shot, which many thought he actually won.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere a lot of talent and fantastic close matched fights on the day. Currently, boxing is in a boom.<\/p>\n
\u201cNext year, we\u2019re going to have more boxers from Torquay hungry to compete, including two local female boxers.<\/p>\n
\u201cBelieve in yourself, train consistently, train smart, put in the work, and your time will come.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a hard concept to grasp, but win or lose, boxing is about learning discipline, humility and becoming a better, more confident human being.<\/p>\n
