A LOCAL grocery store has recently implemented a number of precautionary measures to try to stop the spread of coronavirus.<\/p>\n
Foodworks Lorne store manager Jonn Stewart said the business sought to be proactive in stopping the spread of the virus rather than simply waiting to be guided by regulations.<\/p>\n
A major change the store implemented to protect the safety of its customers and staff was to go cash-free.<\/p>\n
Mr Stewart said this had been a gradual transition.<\/p>\n
“We’ve had signs up for a couple of weeks now promoting card over cash. But this week we’re reducing cash just to one checkout.<\/p>\n
“I understand that some of the elderly prefer cash. But I think everybody has got the message.”<\/p>\n
The bakery has stopped selling loose bread rolls, pizza slices, scones and bagels. The fresh orange juice machine has also been removed.<\/p>\n
Mr Stewart acknowledged this might see a slight reduction in revenue, but said it was common sense.<\/p>\n
“You just stand back and look around and go ‘well, that’s an issue there,’ and it’s just a no-brainer to change things.”<\/p>\n
Last week the grocery store also put clear protective screens at every checkout.<\/p>\n
A portable hand wash sink was also installed at the store’s entrance. Mr Stewart said this turned out to be beneficial.<\/p>\n
“I was impressed with how many people used it. That was quite encouraging.”<\/p>\n
Despite being irregularly busy, other measures have been taken, such as bright lines on the floor at each checkout to serve as a guide to social distancing, and clear protective screens to act as a barrier between the staff and shoppers.<\/p>\n
Customers are being asked to assist staff in the packing of any reusable bags they bring.<\/p>\n
Mr Stewart has resisted doing what other stores have done in bringing back plastic bags.<\/p>\n
He said he considered this “a step in the wrong direction,” so paper bags are available instead.<\/p>\n
To ensure people do not go too long without necessities, shoppers are able to leave their name, phone number and the item they require at the checkout. The store will then contact people when the items are in stock.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
