Favel Parrett\u2019s 2019 novel There Was Still Love has been named Book of the Year at the 2020 Indie Book Awards, a promising stride for the author ahead of this month\u2019s prestigious Stella Prize.<\/p>\n

\n

The Torquay novelist knew the book had won the fiction category two weeks before the announcement was made last Monday, but said she was overjoyed to have taken out the award overall.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s huge, I was so surprised. If you think about what it means, I mean, it\u2019s all of the categories, all of the books and it\u2019s been an absolutely top year in Australian publishing.<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI was very surprised and just so grateful to independent book sellers who are now going to be doing it even tougher.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Parrett, who considers the staff at Torquay Books to be family, said it\u2019s never been more important to support your local book store as people turn to reading in self-isolation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe doors at Torquay Books may be closed but they are open in the fact that you can call or go online and they will deliver the book for free locally, straight away.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cMany book shops are doing this, and what they\u2019re trying to do is stop people into thinking that the only online solution is Amazon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to need books, families are going to need books, kids are going to want books, so just find out if your local\u2019s doing this and go online and order away.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cSuddenly people are losing their jobs but the positive is that the books are still there, support your local and support your community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIn Torquay there\u2019s a lot of ways we can support each other by going out and getting that takeaway coffee form Swell or whatever it is, ordering the books, going to the IGA, all those little things that help the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

There Was Still Love has received critical acclaim since its release, having been shortlisted for the Stella Prize and longlisted for the 2020 Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIA) Awards Best Literary Fiction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A love letter to her late grandparents, the book is the gift that keeps on giving, Parrett said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI\u2019m very surprised at how it\u2019s gone and it seems to keep going and that means so much.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not money, because writers don\u2019t really make a lot, but it means that the next project will get published. The more your book stays on the shelf, the more likely you are to get another contract and then you can get an advance and live off that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cAt this time of lockdown, it\u2019s kind of good for writers because we\u2019re absolutely forced to face that screen, we can\u2019t procrastinate, I can\u2019t say \u2018Oh, I\u2019ll just go to the shops or go to the gym\u2019, it\u2019s like \u2018No, sit down and write\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But it\u2019s not just writing that keeps Parrett occupied.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A lover of dingoes, the award-winning author volunteers at the Dingo Discovery Sanctuary and Research Centre in Toolern Vale every Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

She said her next project, a middle fiction book for 10-year-olds, will be about the sanctuary\u2019s pure alpine dingo, Wandi, who was dropped from the claws of an eagle into a Wandiligong backyard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe sanctuary desperately needed new genes for their breeding program because they\u2019re trying to breed a sustainable population of alpine dingoes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWandi literally fell from the sky and answered the sanctuary\u2019s prayers, so I\u2019m writing his story. I don\u2019t know when it\u2019ll be out, I\u2019m only a couple of rough chapters in. It\u2019ll have illustrations and it\u2019ll be something beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The winner of this year\u2019s Stella Prize \u2013 which celebrates women in Australian literature across all genres \u2013 will be announced on April 14 and livestreamed.<\/p>\n

Parrett said just to be shortlisted was a \u201ccareer highlight\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI burst into tears when they told me and it\u2019s not even the prize money, it\u2019s just being recognised. It\u2019s such an important award and it\u2019s so diverse so that\u2019s why it\u2019s so nice to make it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe other books on the list are all so good, and I know this sounds like a clich\u00e9 but I\u2019m not going to be sad to lose to any of those people. And that\u2019s what\u2019s so good about the Stella \u2013 it\u2019s a real celebration, so whoever wins this, it\u2019s a win for everyone. It\u2019s not like there\u2019s any rivalry. I\u2019m just happy to be in the mix.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
