TORQUAY’S town centre is set to undergo major works to provide extra parking and improve pedestrian safety.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, April 13, Labor member for South Barwon Darren Cheeseman announced the state government would contribute $500,000 towards the “Connecting Torquay’s Town Centre” project as part of its Regional Infrastructure Fund.<\/p>\n

The project is planned to begin later this year. It includes formalised car parking fronting Taylor Park along Zeally Bay Road and Fisher Street, pedestrian crossings on Zeally Bay Road, Bristol Road, Gilbert Street and Pearl Street. Three cycling station points will also be installed.<\/p>\n

The total cost of the project is $800,000, with the Surf Coast Shire council providing the remaining $300,000.<\/p>\n

Surf Coast Shire council mayor Rose Hodge said the works would make the town centre safer and more accessible to different forms of transport.<\/p>\n

“This project will significantly improve access to Torquay’s town centre, whether you’re travelling by foot, bike or car.<\/p>\n

“It will deliver much-needed extra car parking spaces \u2013 and create spaces for long vehicles \u2013 as well as provide pedestrian safety improvements, signage and cycling infrastructure.<\/p>\n

“These works will make it easier for residents and visitors to access shops, restaurants and businesses.”<\/p>\n

Mr Cheeseman said in addition to the improvements in infrastructure the project would help provide jobs.<\/p>\n
