STUDENTS from Surf Coast Secondary College are being given the chance to redevelop the shire’s Youth Pod.<\/p>\n
The pod, which was created form a shipping container, was moved from Winchelsea Skate Park to the school grounds last month ready for the students.<\/p>\n
It was created with support from local Lions Clubs and businesses to give young people a place to socialise and access different services.<\/p>\n
The redevelopment of the pod will be part of Surf Coast Secondary College’s Hands On Learning program, which looks to provide students with different methods of learning not offered by traditional education.<\/p>\n
Program co-ordinator Adam Micallef said the project was a practical opportunity for students to develop a range of skills.<\/p>\n
“The students are excited to get stuck into the refurbishment of the Youth Pod and turn it into something special that can be enjoyed by young people across the Surf Coast.<\/p>\n
“This is a great opportunity for the students to develop a range of trade skills, such as framing, cladding, painting, flooring, all the way down to some general maintenance.”<\/p>\n
“To have a project built by youth and delivered to youth in the same shire will be an amazing achievement; one which our students will be very proud of.”<\/p>\n
Once the students have finished working on the pod, it will be returned to the community.<\/p>\n
Cr Martin Duke said the project would benefit both the students and the broader community as a result.<\/p>\n
“Council is a big supporter of partnership projects like this, as they deliver benefits for many.<\/p>\n
“The students will learn practical skills that they can use throughout life and they get to really take ownership of the project. Plus our local young people get a reinvigorated Youth Pod.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
