A SUPPORT group for new fathers in Torquay has quickly attracted strong numbers, despite having started in a time of isolation.<\/p>\n

Dads of Torquay is being run by the Surf Coast Shire council in partnership with Dads Group.<\/p>\n

The group is being run digitally to help fathers build and maintain relationships during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Under normal circumstances, Dads Groups will regularly meet in person with their kids, whether it is for coffee or gathering at a nearby playground.<\/p>\n

About 39 per cent of new fathers score high for their risk of depression and anxiety. Research also shows when expecting and new fathers experience isolation, loneliness and stress, the whole family often struggles as a result.<\/p>\n

Local father of two Mark Hignett said while the challenges every father faces are unique, Dads of Torquay has offered him extra support amid trying times.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was amazed at how difficult a lot of guys were finding fatherhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, I think it\u2019s as hard as you make it. I personally went through a rough trot when we had our second child because we built a house at the same time. I wasn\u2019t dealing with it all so I sourced some help from a children\u2019s wellbeing expert, who was awesome.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you need another outlet and need people to talk to, the group would be a great tool to have \u2013 to mix with people going through the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cr Martin Duke said the group presented a fantastic opportunity to improve well-being in the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a council, the health and wellbeing of the community is a priority. Parenthood can present some challenging times, so it\u2019s great to see the launch of this local group where dads can catch-up, share their experiences and support each other.\u201d<\/p>\n
