{"id":39934,"date":"2020-07-16T01:00:25","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T15:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=39934"},"modified":"2020-07-16T11:57:08","modified_gmt":"2020-07-16T01:57:08","slug":"help-is-still-at-hand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/help-is-still-at-hand\/","title":{"rendered":"Help is still at hand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jan Juc mum Nicole Dickmann wants the community to know there are still angels walking among us if we ever need a helping hand.<\/p>\n<p>Nicole set up the Surfcoast Angels group in the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic and, since then, her dedicated team of volunteers has helped more than 100 local residents.<\/p>\n<p>The volunteers &#8211; aka \u201cangels\u201d &#8211; assist with everyday tasks such as delivering the weekly shopping, driving to a medical appointment or simply being a friendly voice on the end of the phone.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nicole Dickmann from Surfcoast Angels.\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JxZ42j869Ro?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Nicole, a busy parent to 20-month-old Ayla, said the idea was to offer practical help as well as generating positive energy in the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe term isolation, I think, was kind of scary and daunting for everybody,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like the normality of life has been stripped away for us a bit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurfcoast Angels was just about closing the gap and trying to bring back some sense of normality for people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicole said demand had eased in recent weeks but their good deeds continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith things ramping up a bit in Victoria I think people are probably getting a little nervous again,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want everybody to know that we are all vulnerable and it\u2019s okay to ask for help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to lean on your community \u2013 don\u2019t feel like you can\u2019t call us because a job is too small or we are too busy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if it\u2019s not being able to leave the house to get your favourite bread from Baker\u2019s Delight,\u201d she added, with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>The Surfcoast Angels Facebook page has more than 200 members and there have been up to 20 frontline volunteers at any one time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, a lot of these volunteers are doing all the work,\u201d Nicole insisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI might be the octopus behind the scenes working all the arms and legs to connect people, but they are the ones doing the work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicole said the volunteers\u2019 efforts was regularly acknowledged with heart-warming feedback.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people are really sheepish to ask for help in the beginning but all of them have been really thankful and grateful for the support,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Surfcoast Angels was never about us, it was about helping others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t hug people right now so this is like our virtual hug to our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>To become a volunteer or to reach out for a helping hand email\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"mailto:SurfocastAngels@gmail.com\"><em>SurfcoastAngels@gmail.com<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0or call Nicole on 0428 563 014.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jan Juc mum Nicole Dickmann wants the community to know there are still angels walking among us if we ever need a helping hand.
