Representing the community on Council is a privilege not to be wasted. We are in a position to influence the future of our townships and our region through the plans we make and the decisions we take. And as we do this the most important role is to listen to the community and understand the issues and concerns before decisions and plans are agreed. Draft plans will have input from Councillors but might also include contentious issues that require consideration by many \u2013 not just your nine elected representatives.<\/p>\n
This week we have heard from many different people about draft plans for central Torquay \u2013 we have been given some great feedback and many differing opinions on what is needed for the township. Decisions on the final direction will be challenging, but the what is really important is that broader views are sought and considered, and we are thankful for the many members of the community that take the time to attend forums, read drafts plans and provide their views.<\/p>\n
It is important to acknowledge and respect the differences in our community and treat people with the respect and fairness they deserve. It does not always means that decisions will go your way \u2013 but listening to, and acknowledging the myriad of views makes for a better community.<\/p>\n
Last week Cr David Bell was elected our new Mayor and we offer him hearty congratulations and look forward to the next 12 months under his leadership.<\/p>\n
