ARMSTRONG Creek residents are being called on to help transform their community into a light-filled winter wonderland.
\nWinter Light Walk is an initiative of the 3217 Community Group and it is hoped locals will join in the fun by decorating their homes with lights during July and August.
\nWarralily community development officer, Nina Bendon, said the idea was to create a little magic for children to enjoy during the colder months.
\nMs Bendon said it was hoped residents would get into the spirit by digging out their Christmas lights and decorating all \u2013 or part \u2013 of their homes.
\n\u201cOur group is trying to create a sense of brightness,\u201d Nina said.
\n\u201cIn terms of everything that is going on we know people could be feeling a bit dark and gloomy.
\n\u201cThis is a bit of fun and a way to brighten things up and also something for the kids.\u201d
\nWarralily resident Mary-Ann Gage came up with the idea of lighting up the neighbourhood.
\nMrs Gage, who is originally from Britain, said she felt it was difficult for young children to enjoy the lights at Christmas because it got dark so late.
\n\u201cIn the UK during winter you are in the dark by three in the afternoon,\u201d she said, with a laugh.
\n\u201cI\u2019ve always felt over here the children have to wait until really late to see the lights because it is Christmas in summer.
\n\u201cThis way, it is dark before bedtime and we thought it would be really nice for families to enjoy a walk around the streets while it is still early in the evening.\u201d
\nMrs Gage said she had put lights in her own garden and her neighbours have jumped on board by decorating their balcony.
\nShe said Armstrong Creek was a lovely community to live in and she hoped the Light Up Winter idea would catch on.
\n\u201cIt only has to be something small \u2013 a tree in the garden, a letter box or a window display is enough,\u201d she said.
\n\u201cWe are all at home and staying at home so this is a simple way we can brighten up the area and brighten up winter.\u201d
