THE Torquay Returned and Services League (RSL) will hold a small restricted service on Tuesday, August 18 to commemorate Vietnam Veterans’ Day.<\/p>\n
The marks the Battle of Long Tan during the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n
Last year was the first time Torquay RSL held a memorial for the day, but the coronavirus has halted their plans to build upon it.<\/p>\n
However, Torquay RSL Bob Tyler, a Vietnam veteran himself, said the group would still commemorate the date in a meaningful way.<\/p>\n
“August is special to Vietnam veterans and their families, but this year we are not permitted to have a service open to the public.<\/p>\n
“However, we will represent all Vietnam veterans in the area as we lay a wreath on a day which is very special to them.”<\/p>\n
On the day, a select few individuals will attend a service at the memorial between the Shire offices and Surf Coast Secondary College.<\/p>\n
The RSL flag will also be flying at half-mast throughout August, as both Vietnam Veterans’ Day and the anniversary of the end of World War II fall within the month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
