{"id":40960,"date":"2020-08-13T00:24:32","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T14:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=40960"},"modified":"2020-08-14T16:29:05","modified_gmt":"2020-08-14T06:29:05","slug":"craft-refined-through-patience-and-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/craft-refined-through-patience-and-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"Craft refined through patience and practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ceramic artist Karen Steenbergen is not at all surprised by the recent resurgence in popularity of her chosen craft.<br \/>\nThe Torquay creative took up ceramics 15 years ago and remembers it was love at first sight when she first saw a friend bring a vase to life at her potter\u2019s wheel.<br \/>\n\u201cI was just so amazed to see something appear from nothing,\u201d Karen recalls.<br \/>\n\u201cIt was a ball of clay and with a few direct hand movements it turned into a very three dimensional, very tactile and very beautiful thing.<br \/>\n\u201cIt was so inspiring to see.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-40963 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-200x300.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-683x1024.jpeg 683w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-768x1152.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-1024x1536.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-1365x2048.jpeg 1365w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-scaled.jpeg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><br \/>\nFor Karen, who moved to the Surf Coast from Melbourne a few years ago, ceramics was a natural progression from other creative pursuits such as knitting and mosaics.<br \/>\nShe completed a Diploma in Ceramics at Holmesglen Institute of Tafe in 2012 and recently returned from a two-month residency at Guldagergaard, International Ceramics Centre in Denmark.<br \/>\nNow working under the business name KARst Ceramics, her bespoke pieces and commissions are mostly made with translucent clay and inspired by the natural environment \u2013 from bright ocean blues to earthy ochre tones.<br \/>\n\u201cI grew up on a hobby farm in Gippsland so I bring the green pastures into my work,\u201d she explains.<br \/>\n\u201cThen there are the colours and textures of the local coastline and also the colours of the You Yangs from when I am out hiking.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-40966 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/B-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/B-200x300.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/B-683x1024.jpeg 683w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/B-768x1152.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/B-1024x1536.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/B-1365x2048.jpeg 1365w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/B-scaled.jpeg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><br \/>\nKaren says she was drawn to the Surf Coast for the fresh sea air and the vibrant arts community.<br \/>\n\u201cI moved from Melbourne\u2019s western suburbs where the arts were more hidden,\u201d she says.<br \/>\n\u201cI kind of knew the Surf Coast was a bit of a mecca for artists.<br \/>\n\u201cI have met so many artists and got so much inspiration to progress a career in the arts.\u201d<br \/>\nKaren quickly immersed herself in the community, joining multiple local organisations including Surf Coast Arts, Surf Coast Art Space and Anglesea Art House.<br \/>\nShe also runs ceramics classes and workshops.<br \/>\nKaren says it is wonderful to see more people enjoying the benefits of learning the art of pottery and ceramics.<br \/>\nShe attributes its recent popularity to a couple of things \u2013 mindfulness and sustainability.<br \/>\n\u201cI think one of the reasons is people are so into social media and this a chance to put those devices down, and turn off the TV and Netflix, and create something with their hands,\u201d she explains.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s very mindful. The hours fly by because you really can\u2019t think about anything else so it\u2019s a lovely break.<br \/>\n\u201cPeople are moving away from disposable things &#8211; they want to do something that is more sustainable and not mass produced.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-40963 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-200x300.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-683x1024.jpeg 683w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-768x1152.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-1024x1536.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-1365x2048.jpeg 1365w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/A-scaled.jpeg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cIt has a history because someone has thought about the design, colour and texture.<br \/>\n\u201cSomething that has the hands of the maker on it.\u201d<br \/>\nKaren says while working with clay is rewarding, it is not easy and requires plenty of patience and practice.<br \/>\nRecently she started experimenting with 3D clay printing after her partner, Lars Pehrsson, built her two printers.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s kind of a collaboration between the two of us and we\u2019ve been playing with some designs.\u201d<br \/>\nSome of those 3D pieces feature in a current group exhibition called REVEAL at The Hive Gallery which runs throughout August.<br \/>\nThe exhibition is part of the Surf Coast Shire\u2019s newly launched #NotTheSurfCoastArtsTrail presents PORTAL, an online festival developed in response to the COVID-19 restrictions to ensure there is still a gathering space for Surf Coast creatives of all disciplines.<br \/>\nKaren is the Aireys\/Fairhaven\/Lorne Co-ordinator for PORTAL and is relishing the opportunity to help promote the talents of creatives in those areas.<br \/>\n\u201cRather than abandon the festival the idea was to see if we could get the artists to go online,\u201d she says.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to hear new ideas bubbling that may never have appeared in a normal arts trail year.\u201d<br \/>\nVisit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surfcoastartstrail.com.au\/\">surfcoastartstrail.com.au<\/a> to find out more about PORTAL events during August.
