A GROUP of six riders rolled through the Surf Coast and the Bellarine Peninsula on the weekend as part of a 1,050-kilometre ride to raise more than $10,000 for cancer research.<\/p>\n
Rob Bradley and five friends started the \u201cOn Ya Bike Cancer\u201d ride in Adelaide on November 2 and finished in Port Melbourne on Sunday, passing through Port Campbell on Thursday, Apollo Bay on Friday and Queenscliff on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The ride is in memory of Mr Bradley\u2019s late wife, Cindy Farran, who died from the disease aged 32 on Melbourne Cup Day 2015, and funds raised will be donated to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.<\/p>\n
The team originally hoped to raise $10,000 but passed this figure early on and set a new target of $15,000, with the final total to be revealed next week.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was shattering to witness the battle with cancer Cindy went through over two years,\u201d Mr Bradley said.<\/p>\n
\u201cCindy was an inspiring young girl who wanted to change the world as a nurse and so went back to study and had just got her first job before being diagnosed and realising she\u2019d never get that chance.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to pick up where she left off and do anything I can to help change the world, just like Cindy did. That\u2019s why I decided to do this bike ride.\u201d<\/p>\n
The other riders on the trip included Jim Farran (Cindy’s dad), Sue Cullen (Cindy’s auntie) and family friends Ben Saxe and James Cole.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo watch a good friend go through such heartbreak after Cindy’s passing showed me first-hand the pain and suffering this horrible disease causes,\u201d Mr Cole said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a friend of Rob’s and watching him during his days of sadness, when he asked for help with this bike ride I knew I had to get on board, no matter how daft the idea was.\u201d<\/p>\n
